The U.S. Coast Guard Academy is proud to educate leaders of a multi-mission, maritime military force. As a commissioned officer in the Coast Guard, you will be leading a team of men and women who are continually called on to serve their community, country and fellow citizens.
While the United States Coast Guard is notable as the oldest life-saving service in the world, its roles include more than just Maritime Safety and Security. The Coast Guard is also called upon for critical service in protection of natural resources, maritime mobility (management of maritime traffic, commerce and navigation) and national defense

Program Description: The Mechanical Engineering major provides a solid foundation for service as a Coast Guard Officer, professional engineering practice, and further study in Mechanical Engineering or many other related fields. The major requirements develop the students’ ability to apply scientific principles in the design and analysis of mechanical and energy conversion systems. Students are challenged with design problems in most of the major courses, which provide opportunities for developing creativity in solving real-world problems. The program culminates with a hands-on capstone design project in which teams of students use their acquired knowledge to design, build, and test a practical device.
Outcomes and Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) for Mechanical Engineering
Expected results upon graduation, or "outcomes" are defined by the department and further by the program. In addition to the common Department of Engineering outcomes, further those specific to the Mechanical Engineering major include producing graduates who:
Demonstrate knowledge of chemistry and calculus based physics, with depth in at least one.
Demonstrate ability to apply advanced mathematics through multivariate calculus and differential equations.
Demonstrate familiarity with statistics and linear algebra.
Demonstrate ability to work professionally in both thermal and mechanical systems areas by designing and realizing such systems.
Program Educational Objectives or "PEOs", on the other hand, look ahead several years to offer expectations for graduates early in their career. In addition to the PEOs for all engineering majors, the Mechanical Engineering program PEO is to produce graduates who are prepared to contribute to the safe design, construction, repair, and operation of Coast Guard related mechanical engineering systems.
